I Miss You 02:38
I MISS YOU I miss you I miss you Every time that I awake I’m dreaming of you Dreaming of you In your eyes I’ve seen a light That glows in my mind, Glows in my mind I miss you I miss you In your lips I see a taste I long to smell and feel Smell and feel I miss you I miss you In your mouth I lose myself In your flowing hair I bury my face Our flesh is real And when we die All of our tenderness Will live on in the sky Higher than Everest And into outer space Long past the milky way Beyond the human race I miss you I miss you In your arms I’ve felt afloat I’m drifting with you Drifting with you I miss you I miss you In your body I am safe I fly into the sky Through time Through time

In the middle of summer When the trees are green all through the night I can feel a stirring Like a hummingbird wavering in flight I've seen a light flowing out out from your eyes I've seen a light with the power to hypnotise There's a passion that's poised And it's ready to spring From a long lonely river of pain LONG LONELY RIVER In the shuddering moonlight Fiery messages delivered by hand All the darkened confusion Of a foreigner in a hazardous land I've felt the warmth, a magical ring of fire And I was moved, your breath took me higher and higher There's a passion that's poised And it's ready to spring From a long lonely river of pain From the first time I saw you I was shimmering with a strange prophesy Many years I've been waiting For you to appear right in front of me And when at last, we finally came together I shed my skin in the peril of stormy weather There's a passion that's poised And it's ready to spring From a long lonely river of pain Now the time has come I know I've succumbed And I'm naked now Feel the light With a desperate longing I broke free at last from the bonds of the wife I just had to be with you, it was firmly enscribed in the book of my life I saw a light a million moons ago A blinding light can’t tell if it’s friend or foe There's a passion that's poised And it's ready to spring From a long lonely river of pain There's a passion that's poised And it's ready to spring From a long lonely river of pain

Your Lover 02:52
YOUR LOVER I saw your lover on the street today His head was bowed and he was looking the other way He’s never met me and it’s strange to think of all the things I know About his body and his mind He turned into the supermarket in front of me I was lured in by a strange curiosity He browsed through Special K and Weetabix and Cheerios And I thought You’re not aware of what I know Other people’s lovers, other people’s lives Other people’s secrets, other people’s lies And it seems to me Like every generation carries on Weaving tangled silver webs He wore a leather jacket he got from his Uncle Joe His hair was short he had it cut just a week ago And by the deli counter He glanced at me unknowingly And I had the strangest picture in my mind Other people’s lovers, other people’s lives Other people’s secrets, other people’s lies And it seems to me Like every generation carries on Weaving tangled silver webs I had to get into the same check-out queue as him I saw his wallet with a photograph of you in I left the store and all the way home I was whistling to myself That life is stranger than a song Other people’s lovers, other people’s lives Other people’s secrets, other people’s lies And it seems to me Like every generation carries on Weaving tangled silver webs Other people’s lovers, other people’s lives Other people’s secrets, other people’s lies And it seems to me Like every generation carries on Weaving tangled silver webs

HERE IT COMES AGAIN It’s a deep feeling I have for you It’s a keen believing I have in you When you walk into a room, it’s so nice to see you When I hear the telephone, it’s so nice to hear you And even when you’re gone, it’s so nice to think of you My moods are spinning around Spiraling up and plummeting down Oh no here it comes again Oh no here it comes again Oh no here it comes again no no no no Oh no here it comes again no no no no It’s a strange feeling I have for you It’s a jaded doubting I have in you Your indifference really hurts I’m tumbling into my shell I feel like throwing in the towel But only time will tell I can only give so much And then I hear that bell My moods are spinning around Spiraling up and plummeting down Oh no here it comes again Oh no here it comes again Oh no here it comes again no no no no Oh no here it comes again no no no no There’s a deep wounding you make in me Like a razor cutting away at me You’re a man and you are scared Of a woman’s love for you You keep pushing me away Afraid that I’ll hurt you If you’d only let me in Then you could feel love too My moods are spinning around Spiraling up and plummeting down Oh no here it comes again Oh no here it comes again Oh no here it comes again no no no no Oh no here it comes again no no no no

TOUCH THE SKY The hawks are a-hovering The windsailers drifting The moors are a-humming With the wind and the light The climbers are slowly ascending With the rock and the air And the peak looms beyond us, Silhouetted by light And we could almost, almost touch the clouds And we could almost, almost touch the clouds The silence is ringing With the calm all around The shadows are sailing With the movement of cloud The echo of metal a ripple Like chimes on the wind The figures are moving Drawing us in And we could almost, almost touch the sky And we could almost, almost touch the sky The summer is fading In front of our eyes The sunlight is changing With a chill in the air The climbers are slowly ascending With the rock and the air And the peak looms beyond us Silhouetted by light And we could almost, almost touch the sky And we could almost, almost touch the sky

Blind Woman 03:59
BLIND WOMAN On a cloudy cloudy morning, I’m so empty and bereft I’ve bashed my head against a wall (for so long) Now I feel there’s nothing left. It’s not a rational decision, it’s just the place we ended up I cannot hide my feelings (any more) I don’t want to feel this way Holy mercy holy cow, what do we what do we what do we do now Holy mackerel holy smoke what a way what a way what a way to go You’re the sunshine in my eyes, what if one day the sun don’t shine How will I find my way through life if I’m a blind woman And the loving feelings linger, you’re the nicest man I know And you know it’s not your fault at all, I’ve just discovered I’m alive I know you want to try again dear, but everything stays the same We’re not around for very long (in this world), the time has come to make a change Holy mercy holy cow, what do we what do we what do we do now Holy mackerel holy smoke what a way what a way what a way to go You’re the sunshine in my eyes, what if one day the sun don’t shine How will I find my way through life if I’m a blind woman If I’m right or if I’m wrong the fact is we don’t get along Let’s call it a day and start to live again Every time I see the light, when the dawn shines through the night I’m bubbling up because I’m free again Holy mercy holy cow, what do we what do we what do we do now Holy mackerel holy smoke what a way what a way what a way to go You’re the sunshine in my eyes, what if one day the sun don’t shine How will I find my way through life if I’m a blind woman Seeing all your sorry teardrops, makes my body reel with pain I’m clouded over and confused now, maybe we should try again Holy mercy holy cow, what do we what do we what do we do now Holy mackerel holy smoke what a way what a way what a way to go You’re the sunshine in my eyes, what if one day the sun don’t shine How will I find my way through life if I’m a blind woman Maybe I’m a blind woman Everybody tells me I’m a blind woman You’ll regret it someday blind woman I suspect I suspect I’m a blind woman But I know but I know I’m not a blind woman Everybody tells me I’m a blind woman You’ll regret it someday blind woman But I know but I know I’m not a blind woman

WOMEN GO FLYING WITH THEIR MINDS Yesterday, I sat on my own with pictures in my mind Tried to let all my thoughts and fears unwind Tried to come clean at least to me Troubled times, nothing is clear and nothing gets resolved All of our words are nothing to behold Nothing we say can change things now So fly through the sky, fly back through time If you find a way, tell me, if you want to say, tell me tell me, If you see the day, tell me why-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay It’s not logical but intellect’s secondary anyway I’ll go with my intuition any day ‘Cause women go flying with their minds Why heavens above do men shy away from love Why men hide away from the truth that women say By the way it’s quite stimulating just to theorise Try to peel layers from our dimming eyes The biggest deception’s to ourselves So fly through the sky, fly back through time If you find a way, tell me, if you want to say, tell me tell me, If you see the day, tell me why-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay

about

This is a rough 4 track demo, recorded at Psalter Lane Art College in 1994 and uploaded here in case anyone is interested in very obscure early 90s Sheffield bands.

Jude Calvert-Toulmin started writing music on the piano at five years old then taught herself guitar at nine. She was a busker on the London tube during the 80s, singing and playing twelve-string guitar and the muse behind Aztec Camera's top ten hits Oblivious and Walk out to Winter.

In the 90s she moved back to her hometown of Sheffield and formed the band Venus Tree, featuring Sally Doherty on vocals and flute, Steve Babalola on bongos and seventeen year old schoolgirl Katie Bell on cello. Gigging around Sheffield, they started to get some local press, including the cover of indy music mag SAM, but due to Jude´s third pregnancy and childcare commitments the band split up. All that remains is this very rough demo.

Jude subsequently became an author publishing 7 novels, one of which, Mother-in-Law, Son-in-Law, became a best seller after she read an exercept on her winning episode of Channel 4 show Come Dine With Me in front of 5 mllion viewers. You can find her at www.judeauthor.com.

Sally Doherty went on to release eleven albums, some solo, some collaborative. She has written music for BBC TV and BBC 4 Radio Drama, and worked with numerous other artists. She sang the accompanying vocals on Richard Hawley's cover of Johnny Cash's Long Black Veil and on Hawley's album Lady's Bridge. richardhawley.co.uk
